FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Surrey, BC – SALCBC launches additional legal services and programs at its new office in the heart of Newton in Surrey. They serve the South Asian community by offering low-barrier, multilingual and culturally sensitive legal information, education, advice and advocacy.

The South Asian Legal Clinic of BC is a non-profit organization first established by a group of South Asian women in BC who witnessed first-hand the gaps in access to justice for South Asian people in the province.

“I’m grateful today as we officially opened our first clinic to provide further free services to our community, where South Asian Community members receive pro-bono legal services and education.  We are excited to offer enhanced services and help reduce the barriers to access faced by many in our community.  We appreciate all of the support we have received from our volunteers, funders, community partners, legal community and most importantly our South Asian clients” said Co-Founder and Managing Lawyer, Meena Dhillon.

The Honourable Niki Sharma, Attorney General of B.C. joined SALCBC to officially launch the grand opening. Honourable Judge Bowry of the Provincial Court, Jeevyn Dhaliwal, K.C. - President the Law Society and The Honourable Wally Uppal-KC were also in attendance.

“For many people, navigating B.C.’s justice system can feel overwhelming,” said Niki Sharma, Attorney General. “I’m so glad that the South Asian Legal Clinic is growing and has established a new office, so that more people can easily access culturally relevant legal guidance and feel empowered to address their justice matters with confidence.”
